About Brittany Gause

When I was little, I had quite the imagination and I enjoyed making things with my hands. Whether it was building unique habitats for slugs and worms I found, or making crafts with my grandma, I was always creating something and I continue to do so. I love creating art---and that includes making music---because there’s so much freedom in it. It takes me a few tries to find what I’m aiming to make in a piece of artwork, but once I discover something that works, I create something I never would’ve imagined I’m capable of, and that’s a feeling I’ll never get tired of.

To me, art is the union of talent, technique, and passion and using that to turn an idea into a creation that expresses your perspective on a certain subject(s). It can evoke emotions and cause people to stop and reflect. Whether it’s through a meticulous process or a spontaneous one, as long as you’re passionate and intentional about what you’re creating, it’s art. I create art because it’s an outlet for me where I can just experiment with my ideas and after a while, turn them into something I want to share with others, something I’m proud of. I don’t like to settle for what looks good, I like to push myself into creating something excellent. Because if I’m not trying my absolute best at what I love doing, why do it at all? True artists aren’t lazy; we put hours into our work because we do more than just materialize our ideas onto a canvas. We put our thoughts, our emotions, our aspirations, our lives into our work. I put a bit of myself into every piece I make because the people I’ve encountered, places I’ve been, experiences I’ve had, lessons I’ve learned in my life, they’re my sources of inspiration. I put my passion for music into my sustained investigation pieces and my desire to travel in my scanography piece. I used my love for my family in my first short narrative film and applied my talent for storytelling in my first animation.

Until sophomore year, I always thought of art in the traditional sense. But once I took digital media arts, a whole other door opened up for me. I’ve always been hesitant at trying new things because I’m afraid of failure. But I’m so glad I decided to try that class because I’ve learned so much from the three years I’ve been taking it. My junior year was the first time I picked up a DSLR camera and the moment I learned how to use one, I knew I wanted to work with cameras for the rest of my life. That same year, I discovered that I have a passion for filmmaking. I’ve always loved watching movies. Whenever I see a trailer for a new movie coming out I get excited because films are more than just moving pictures on a screen. They’re stories come to life. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve “talked to” characters on the screen from my living room. Or how many times I’ve reacted out loud to a scene or a piece of dialogue I heard. I love the feeling of getting reeled into a story and feeling connections to the characters in them. And it wasn’t until taking DMA that I realized I could be on the other side of movies; I could make them.

I intend to study Motion Pictures at Wright State University. I’m beyond excited to learn what it takes to create a film, how to become a filmmaker and pursue a career in this field of work. And I pray that whatever stories I bring to the big screen not only inspire those who watch them, but someday make a difference in the world.
